What is a Tincture & How do You Use it?

A tincture is a basic form of cannabis extract, where a cannabis-infused liquid is ingested under the tongue.

Located off of 495 in Lowell, MA, Smyth Cannabis Co. is the most popular dispensary for tinctures near Andover, Ayer, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Nashua, Dracut, Groton, Haverhill, Lawrence, Littleton, Lowell, North Andover, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Westford, Wilmington, Woburn and the surrounding towns.

How Are They Made?

Technically, the term “tincture” implies that the solution is alcohol-based. However, it is more commonly used as an umbrella term. Tinctures can have a base made up of either alcohol, glycerin or oil, which is then steeped with cannabis for several days. After the plant matter is removed and strained, you are left with an edible liquid rich in terpenes and cannabinoids.

And while tinctures are intended to be consumed orally instead of through smoking or vaporization, they are not considered to be a food item by most major markets. This allows them to frequently exceed potency limits that most states enforce on edibles. Because they are absorbed right into the bloodstream from under the tongue, they do not pass through the liver. So the effects of a tincture will come on quicker but less strong than with other methods.

How to Use a Tincture

Many dispensaries will group their tinctures into the same category as their edibles. This is due to the general method of consumption, even though there is a slight difference, as stated above. The tincture will most likely come in a small bottle with a dropper.

  1. Shake The Bottle — Be sure to give your tincture a good shake before opening to fix any separation that may have occurred.
  2. Start With One Drop — Start slow, especially if this is your first time using a tincture. We recommend starting with one single drop under your tongue.
  3. Let it Sit for 45 Seconds & Swallow — Let the drop sit undisturbed under your tongue for about 30 – 45 seconds before swallowing. Swallowing the droplet before giving it a chance to be absorbed under the tongue will compromise its effectiveness.
  4. Repeat if Necessary — You should start to feel the effects of the tincture after about 15 – 30 minutes. Remember that due to the consumption method, the effects of a tincture will come on quicker but less strong than you may be used to.

What Are the Benefits?

  • Dose Control — Because droplets are so small, consumers are able to control their dosing to a very precise amount.
  • Minimum Effective Dose (MED) — Low and slow dosing gives consumers a better grasp on their minimum effective dose, or smallest amount required to control symptoms and produce they desired effects. This can help keep your tolerance low and save you money by allowing you to buy from lower-potency products without reduced efficiency.
  • Low Calorie — Tinctures are typically lower in calories than many other edible options, including sodas, chocolates, gummies and baked goods.
  • Discreet Use — A drop under the tongue is much more subtle in both process of use and impact on your body than eating edibles or smoking, vaping, etc.
  • Long Shelf Life — A single tincture can last up to several years as long as it is properly stored.

Top Picks — High CBD Strains

So, consumers are able to benefit from the bodily effects of cannabis without affecting their headspace. High CBD strains are most commonly used for medical purposes, but they may also benefit anyone else looking to use cannabis products without getting high.

Located off of 495 in Lowell, MA, Smyth Cannabis Co. is the most popular dispensary for high CBD strains in Andover, Ayer, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Nashua, Dracut, Groton, Haverhill, Lawrence, Littleton, Lowell, North Andover, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Westford, Wilmington, Woburn and the surrounding towns.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, CBD is an active ingredient found in cannabis. CBD does not contain THC. And unlike THC, CBD does not have any psychoactive properties. So, CBD alone will not make a consumer feel high.

How Does CBD Work?

Humans brains have our own internal endocannabinoid systems that we use to maintain homeostasis. This system also allows us to process cannabinoids through a network of neurotransmitters and receptors.

THC activates the CB1 receptors in our brain, whereas, CBD restricts activity in the CB1 receptors. They produce opposite effects. Additionally, CBD also binds to other parts of the body (including 12 targets in the brain alone) to make you feel good.

Because of the way that they interact with both our endocannabinoid systems and each other, at least a small amount of THC does need to be present in order for the benefits of CBD to reach their full potential. But luckily, products high in CBD are readily available at your local dispensary. Here are our favorite high CBD strains of marijuana:

5. Charlotte’s Web | Hemp CBD

charlotte's web

Charlotte’s Web is actually a strain of hemp originally bred with cannabis to create a new strain with higher CBD and lower THC than most other marijuana strains on the market. This strain contains less than 0.3% THC and is non-intoxicating. Its name pays tribute to a young girl named Charlotte Figi who was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy. Her physicians and parents say her seizures were dramatically reduced by her consumption of medical marijuana when she was just five years old.

  • Breeder: Stanley Brothers of Colorado
  • Cross: Industrial Hemp x Unspecified Cannabis Strain
  • Tastes Like: Sweet, Woodsy

4. Ringo’s Gift | Hybrid

ringos gift

This high CBD strain was named after Lawrence Ringo, a cannabis activist and pioneer community known as the “Father of Cannabis.” Ringo’s Gift comes in many different phenotypes with different ratios varying from 1:1, all the way up to 24:1. A 13:1 ratio of CBD to THC is standard for Ringo’s Gift. In short, this strain is known to help consumers sleep.

  • Breeder: Southern Humboldt Seed Collective
  • Cross: Harle-Tsu x ACDC
  • Tastes Like: Earthy & Woody

3. ACDC | Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

acdc strain

ACDC is a high CBD strain popular with medical patients. The CBD to THC ratio is about 20:1. Commonly used to combat the negative side effects of chemotherapy, it produces almost zero intoxicating effects for most consumers.

  • Breeder: Resin Seeds
  • Cross: Cannatonic x Ruderalis
  • Tastes Like: Earthy & Woody

2. Stephen Hawking Kush | Indica

stephen hawking kush

Named after the famous scientist, Stephen Hawking Kush was bred as a party of Alphakrokik Genes’ series of high CBD strains known as “Great Minds.” There are 3 known phenotypes of SHK, all with similar flavor profiles. Above all, the relaxing effects of this strain help to suppress nausea and alleviate pain.

  • Breeder: Alphakrokik Genes
  • Cross: Harle-Tsu x Sin City Kush
  • Tastes Like: Fruity w/ Notes of Mint

1. Sour Tsunami | Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

sour tsunami

Sour Tsunami was one of the first cannabis strains bred to to be high in CBD, as opposed to THC. Its characteristic dark green and purple buds produce a gassy, diesel flavor profile. Like other high CBD strains, sour tsunami is used to treat pain without making consumers feel the “high” of a strain higher in THC.

  • Breeder: Southern Humboldt Seed Collective
  • Cross: Sour Diesel x NYC Diesel
  • Tastes Like: Gassy; Musky

Where to Buy High CBD Strains

Again, THC must be present in order for CBD to be fully efficient. So you’ll need to visit a local dispensary to purchase a high CBD strain of marijuana.

High CBD strains are most commonly used for medicinal purposes, although their bodily effects can be beneficial to recreational consumers, as well. For this reason, consumers without a valid MA medical marijuana card may have the best luck finding a high CBD strain at a dispensary that has dual licensure to sell both medical and recreational products.

Hemp CBD vs. Cannabis CBD

The CBD products you see available over-the-counter in stores are derived from hemp, not cannabis. Unlike cannabis, the hemp plant does not contain any THC. Consequently, CBD products purchased anywhere other than a marijuana dispensary are not likely to yield any noticeable results, because they do not contain THC.

The 2018 Farm Bill made certain hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC federally legal. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC are still considered marijuana, and therefore federally illegal. Cannabis (including all its active ingredients) is legal in Massachusetts for both recreational and medical use.

3 Best Weed Strains For Beginners

Often times, a bad first-time experience with marijuana can discourage a person from giving it a second chance. Regardless of whether you choose an indica, sativa or hybrid, enough of any high potency weed will make you feel disoriented. You’ll want to judge the effects of your strain choice before reaching this stage, so it’s important to start off slow. New users, or those with a generally low tolerance, should be extra careful to avoid getting too high. Here are three of best weed strains that we recommend for beginners:

Located off of 495 in Lowell, MA, Smyth Cannabis Co. has the most popular weed strains for beginners near Andover, Ayer, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Nashua, Dracut, Groton, Haverhill, Lawrence, Littleton, Lowell, North Andover, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Westford, Wilmington, Woburn and the surrounding towns.

3. Blue Dream | Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

https://www.leafly.com/strains/blue-dream

This sativa-leaning hybrid was bred from a combo of Blueberry and Haze. Originating from California, it is now one of the most sought-after strains widely available in the U.S. Tasting also of sweet berries, Blue Dream has a peppery/piney kick to it to add a level of complexity. It averages around 18% THC, but also tests low for CBD concentration, making it an easy weed strain for beginners and veterans alike.

2. Blissful Wizard | Hybrid

https://www.leafly.com/strains/blissful-wizard

This creamy, lemon-lime flavored strain leads to a bubbly and blissful high. Additionally, it’s been credited with alleviating physical aches pains and chronic nausea. THC content is higher than that of Blue Dream, so beginners should tread very lightly with this one. But we do think the pleasant high achieved by this strain will leave a positive lasting impression on the newbies.

1. Granddaddy Purple | Indica — The Best Weed Strain For Beginners

best weed strains for beginners granddaddy purple

https://www.leafly.com/strains/granddaddy-purple

Also known as “Grand Daddy Purp,” “Granddaddy Purps,” “GDP” and “Grandaddy Purple Kush.” This strain is known for its stunning deep purple flowers and its sweet, berry-like flavor profile. This calming indica is a top choice for weed strains for beginners. While you may find yourself in a pleasant daydream, you most likely won’t stray far from the couch after smoking this one.

Avoid Strains Very High in THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the cannabinoid in marijuana responsible for making you feel high. While THC is the driving force behind the pleasant effects you may feel, such as a heightened sensory perception, laughter and an increased appetite, it can also cause adverse reactions. Too much THC can lead to feelings of nausea, anxiety, lethargy, dizziness and paranoia.

I like to compare it to cooking. THC, like salt, can always be added. But it can never be removed. So start off slow with THC — you can always add more if needed!

High CBD Weed Strains For Beginners

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid found in both cannabis and hemp plants. Unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects, meaning it does not give you a euphoric head rush. CBD will not get you high. Instead, you will feel its affect throughout your body, in the form of calm comfort, sleepiness and an overall sense of relaxation.

It is important to note that in order for CBD to work effectively, at least a small amount of THC must be present.

Consider Your Delivery Method

So you’ve chosen your strain,  but what next? Consider the following when deciding how you are looking to use it:

  • Smoking allows you to control your dose and only take a small amount at a time. Most negative affects will subside after just half an hour. Don’t just jump right into a whole pre-roll — consider a few hits from a bowl or even a one-hitter to control your pace. Smoking does however cause a burning sensation in the throat which usually leads to coughing. Vaporizers are said to be easier on the throat and oil cartridges for them are readily available at most dispensaries.
  • If smoking isn’t for you, cannabis edibles can also be ingested. There are a variety of different products available in all different forms and flavors. Effects are often more intense, longer-lasting and can take up to two hours to really kick in, which may catch you by surprise.
  • If you’re looking to use marijuana for relief of symptoms such as localized pain and inflammation, topicals are a good option. Cannabis cannot enter your system through your skin, so even topical products with a high THC content are a safe bet. Topicals allow you to feel the physical benefits of cannabis without any of the psychoactive effects.

Types of Dabs & Cannabis Concentrates — Which to Choose?

Types of Dabs & Cannabis Concentrates — Which to Choose?

What are Concentrates?

With so many types of dabs available, which one should you choose? Concentrates, oils and extracts, also known as “dabs,” are products that have been processed to extract cannabinoids and terpenes from the cannabis plant while removing excess plant material. The process involves separating the trichomes from the rest of the plant. Because of this, concentrates have a much larger concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes than flower alone.

The oldest type of concentrate is hash, or dried blocks of packed kief. People have been making it for thousands of years. Originally, the technique involved hand collecting and separating the hash. While some small shops still incorporate traditional solvent-free methods, most producers have moved to solvent-based extraction.

Solvent-Based Extraction

During solvent-based extraction, essential oils within the cannabis plant are separated using chemical solvents such as butane, propane, alcohol and CO2. Solvent-based extraction will make many different consistencies, depending on how the product is treated. Today, most concentrates and types of dabs are identified based on their consistency.

Usually, the harder a dap is, the less terpenes it contains. Concentrates with gooey and saucy consistencies tend to have the highest amounts of terpenes. However, if the concentrate is too runny, it will be difficult to smoke. To sum it up, concentrate consistency is a matter of personal preference.

And while the terms concentrate and extract are often used interchangeably, they are not actually the same. Extracts are a specific type of concentrate made using solvents. In short, all extracts are concentrates, but not all concentrates are extracts.

What are the Benefits of Concentrates?

  • Most types of concentrates do not need to be smoked. For example, most consumers choose to go smoke-free by vaporizing or even eating them.
  • Cannabis concentrates are potent and effective. So, it takes less product to get the results you’re looking for.
  • Extracts are refined. Essential oils and cannabinoids are separated from plant material to create a smooth, clean flavor-forward experience.

Smoking Dabs

You don’t need to have a fancy dab rig set up to enjoy smoking concentrates because you can get an extra boost of potency just by simply mixing your flower with powdery kief or wrapping some wax around your joint.

If you are looking to further explore the world of dabs, you’ll want to invest in a dab rig. Dab rings are usually made of glass, ceramic, titanium or quartz and are equipped with a “nail” (the equivalent of the bowl of a bowl), which is heated up and applied directly to the concentrate, creating vapor which is then inhaled. Traditional methods require a high-temperature torch to heat up the nail, but electric nails are also on the market.

In addition, most weed stores carry a selection of vape pens. A vape pen is a discreet and portable option for smoking concentrates. Although it will not produce vapor as potent as a dab rig, it is an excellent choice for convenience.

Vape pens consist of a battery-operated heating element that is activated either by a button or by taking a drag, and a cartridge which is then heated up and vaporized. While some cartridges can be refilled and reused, you’ll find a selection of pre-filled vape cartridges at your local dispensary. Most of these are designed to fit most vape pens using universal 510 threads.

Different types of concentrates require different levels of heat in order to burn properly. Therefore, you should check with your budtender to make sure your rig is compatible.

Check out this article for some other factors to consider when choosing your dab concentrates.

How Else Can Concentrates be Consumed?

Most people are familiar with “dabbing,” or heating up a concentrate and inhaling its vapors. But you do not need to dab in order to consume concentrates. Other options include tinctures, topicals and edibles.

5 Best Sativa Strains

Looking for a head-rush high that will leave you feeling energized, focused and productive? We recommend going for a sativa. They’re great for helping you tackle physical activities, whether it’s a long and leisurely hike or a cleaning spree. Here are our picks for the 5 best sativa strains on the market right now:

Located off of 495 in Lowell, MA, Smyth Cannabis Co. is the most popular dispensary for sativas near me in Andover, Ayer, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Nashua, Dracut, Groton, Haverhill, Lawrence, Littleton, Lowell, North Andover, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Westford, Wilmington, Woburn and the surrounding towns.

What is a Sativa?

Sativas are known for their uplifting and energizing effects. They are associated with more of a “head high” than indica strains.

But the difference between an indica and a sativa is actually the makeup of the plant itself. From 1753 to 1785, all cannabis plants were categorized as “Cannabis sativa L.,” with “Cannabis” as the genus, “sativa” as the species, and “L.” to indicate its Linnaean taxonomy.

After this time period, French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck separated the plant into two distinct species: “Cannabis sativa,” a taller and more fibrous plant, and “Cannabis indica,” a much shorter and more psychoactive plant.

5. Ghost Train Haze

ghost train haze strain sativa

Ghost Train Haze is a sativa unlike others you’ve tried before. This best sativa strain contender has a sour citrus and floral aroma. 1. Lilac Diesel | The Best Sativa Strain

  • Breeder: Ethos Collective
  • Cross: (Super Lemon Haze x Forbidden Fruit) x NYC Cherry Pie x Citral Glue
  • Tastes Like: Honey, Sweet, Berries, Pine, Floral

While sativas are usually associated with a more uplifting and energetic high, this is not always the case. In short, each and every cannabis strain has its own unique chemical profile that will interact differently with each person’s body chemistry.

You can better understand a strain’s effects by looking more in depth at the cannabinoids and terpenes its contains. But for beginners, the indica/sativa/hybrid model is a quick and easy way to get a basic idea of how a strain will affect you.

5 Best Indica Strains

Looking for a mellow high that will leave you feeling calm and relaxed? We recommend going for an indica. They’re great for chilling out at the end of the night, watching a movie or listening to music, taking a nap, or just staring at the wall. What is an Indica?

Indicas are known for their calming and relaxing effects. Just think of “in da couch.” They’re known to slow you down more than sativa strains.

After this time period, French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck separated the plant into two distinct species: “Cannabis sativa,” a taller and more fibrous plant, and “Cannabis indica,” a much shorter and more psychoactive plant.

So don’t be surprised if your eyes get heavy as a blanket of calm drapes over you. With interesting and floral notes of citrus and berry spice, you’ll savor this unique flavor profile.

While indicas are usually associated with a more psychoactive, “in your head” type of high, this is not always the case.

Top Picks — High THC Strains

With so many strains of cannabis available, you’re probably wondering what to make of the percentages used to label each one. The THC percentage indicates the concentration of THC that the product contains per gram. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Usually, the higher in THC your product is, the faster and more intensely you will feel the “head high” and analgesic effects (pain relieving, appetite stimulating, etc.). Here are our favorite high-THC strains of marijuana:

Located off of 495 in Lowell, MA, Smyth Cannabis Co. is the most popular dispensary for high THC strains near Andover, Ayer, Billerica, Burlington, Chelmsford, Nashua, Dracut, Groton, Haverhill, Lawrence, Littleton, Lowell, North Andover, North Reading, Reading, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, Wakefield, Westford, Wilmington, Woburn and the surrounding towns.

1. Quattro Kush | Indica

high thc strains: quattro kush by smyth cannabis co.

Quattro Kush is an indica that is noted for its very high THC content and wonderfully offensive terpene profile. Definitely not a high THC strain for beginners, its effects come on strong and hit you like a truck. (In a good way!) However, Quattro Kush produces a very happy and euphoric high that’ll leave you hungry and stress free.

  • Breeder: Ethos Collective
  • Cross: 707 Headband x Triangle Kush x SFV OG Kush
  • Tastes Like: Earthy, Gas, Garlic, Hot Garbage

THC: Is The More The Merrier?

Remember that “stronger” isn’t always the same thing as “better.” Taking in a higher amount of THC than you are used to increases your likelihood of experiencing some of the unpleasant side effects.

Anxiety is the most common side effect of THC. Each strain contains its own unique terpene profile, which is why there is often so much variation in their taste and smell. The terpenes present in the strain you choose will also play a key role in your experience. Certain terpenes can exacerbate feelings of anxiety.

It may take longer for you to feel the effects of a flower lower in THC, but this may also give you more of an opportunity to truly enjoy its benefits without getting too high for your comfort.
